As story has it, the history of de Olde Veste, the old fort market town Steenwijk, goes back to the year one thousand. Colossal gateways are now being restored back to their former glory and rise impressively above you as you walk through the heart of the town.
Outside the town borders, Steenwijk is cloaked in forests and hilly areas and is surrounded by three extensive, beautiful country estates. These are words to excite all cyclists and walkers. The Grote Sint Clemenskerk (church) is the oldest building in Steenwijk. Pretty wall paintings and a tower 86 metres high will certainly entice you to visit. The Park Rams Woerthe is exceptionally beautiful, as is the villa.
