Lemmer is a greatest of Friesland water sports locations and has a central function for the south of the province of Friesland. Lemmer is in Lemsterland - a water-rich area with many lakes - near the IJsselmeer eg still Tjeukemeer and Grote Brekken.
The Lemsteraak is the type of historic flat-bottomed sailing ship that comes from Lemmer. With the construction of the final dike and the polders of Flevoland, the importance waned in the fishery. Today Lemmer has a central function for southern Friesland and the northern part of Flevoland.
Because of its location at the end of the Prinses Magriet channel and close to the IJsselmeer water sports tourism today is of great importance. Each year the Lemsterweek is performed with a series of events.
